While You Were Sleeping」 is that kind of drama where the audience can relate to the characters and the story arcs and at the same time hopes that it becomes a reality in their lives. It stars veteran actress, the lovely 수지 (Bae Suzy); and veteran actor, the handsome 이종석 (Lee Jong Suk).

Watching 「While You Were Sleeping」 made me feel again what it is to truly fall in love. It was lovely, touching, and memorable, a drama I would repeatedly watch and a relationship anyone would die for.

Episode stories

Some of the episode stories were good but there were those which were great. Out of the total 16 episodes, there are 5 anyone would watch repeatedly. The “legal” aspect were good, the comedy were very funny, and the relationship between characters were what anyone can relate to.

Series story

The overall story of the show was neatly written and realistic. It isn’t your typical boy-meets-girl-and-they-lived-happily-ever-after which are usually boring and only for the “giggles” factor. 「While You Were Sleeping」 have the dynamics and challenges usually experienced by two strangers, turned friends, and started falling for each other yet there were some things holding them back.

Overall, the acting were amazing. They easily portrayed the personality of the characters they were playing. However in the latter part of the series where there were more kissing scenes, the two lead actors weren’t into it. I am assuming those scenes were filmed near the beginning of the project and they weren’t at ease with each other yet, if so, it was not a good decision. In those particular kissing scenes both actors were lacking emotions, it was “platonic”, they were just “acting”.

The supporting actors did well too and made their characters memorable especially when it comes to comedy, they delivered the scenes perfectly. Great job!

For the whole series, there were only 5 songs which made an impact out of 14 included in the OST. These songs were played in the correct scenes and hopefully were used also in more scenes, or at least an instrumental instead of the other music they used.

Rewatch value

I’ve watched this twice already. The first time was the Filipino-dub version and recently the original Korean-dub. Anyone can watch 「While You Were Sleeping」 anytime and everytime they want, it is a light drama and very romantic.

Suzy Bae

Suzy Bae did well in portraying a lovable and pretty character who anyone would fall into at first sight. Keep it up, Suzy!

Overall score

I give 「While You Were Sleeping」 an overall score of 9.0 out of 10 stars.

If this is not the end of oblivion, then I shall live everyday as if my life were to end this very day.

The YOOki (柳紀 ・ 유 기) Chronicles

The YOOki (柳紀 ・ 유 기) Chronicles is ᜌᜓᜃᜒ (Yuki ・ 雪亮)’s return into casual and personal blogging. The name “YOOki” is a mash-up of the acronym of YourOnly. One and my nickname ᜌᜓᜃᜒ (Yuki ・ 雪亮).

Interestingly, according to Chinese legend, 「柳」 (YOO) is an ancient Chinese surname. The ancestors of the surname were closely linked with the ancient sage-king named Yu Shun. In Korea, the 「유」 (YOO) lineage traces to the Xia, Han, and Joseon dynasties. Holders of the surname Yu or Yoo had a reputation for charity and diligence.1

It is also the word for “willow” or the “willow tree” which means graceful or slender; and a tree growing near a body of water which provide continuous nourishment and resources for everyone. It can also mean to exist, an oil (anointment(?)), and simply as “U” (you).

The hanzi 「紀」 (ki) character means to record, be disciplined, provide order. While the hangul equivalent, 「기」 (ki; gi), means energy, spirit, a banner, and a period of time; and is also a suffix used to make a gerund or an infinitive.

Can you guess what I mean by 「柳紀」 and 「유 기」 as the Chinese and Korean for “YOOki”?
